Edible icing sheets can be applied to round, square, rectangle and heart-shaped cakes. For the neatest finish, we recommend cutting the design to shape before applying it to your cake.
How to apply your icing sheet
- Make sure your fondant-covered cake top is smooth, clean and dry.
- Carefully cut out your edible icing sheet to the required shape using clean, dry scissors or a sharp craft knife.
- Lightly dampen the fondant surface using a fine mist of water, or apply a very thin layer of edible glue with a clean brush. The surface should feel only slightly tacky—not wet.
- Gently place the icing sheet onto the cake, starting from one edge and smoothing it down slowly to avoid air bubbles or creases.
- Once in place, add a piped buttercream or royal-icing border around the edge to give your cake a neat, finished look.
Top tip: Apply edible icing sheets as close to serving as possible, and keep the cake away from moisture and condensation.

There are two ways to apply edible icing-sheet characters to a fondant-covered cake.
Option 1:
Apply directly to the cake
- Carefully cut around the character using clean, dry scissors or a craft scalpel.
- Lightly dampen the area of fondant where you would like it to sit, using a very small amount of water or edible glue.
- Gently place the character onto the cake and smooth it carefully into position.
This method is quick and works beautifully for flat designs.
Option 2:
Create a freestanding character
This is the best option if you would like your character to stand up on the cake.
- Cut out your edible character and place it safely to one side.
- Roll out a small piece of fondant thinly on a clean, dry surface.
- Lightly dampen the fondant, then carefully place the character on top.
- Using a craft scalpel, cut around the edge of the character, cutting through both the icing sheet and fondant.
- Carefully remove the finished piece and leave it flat on a clean surface to air-dry—preferably overnight. Once dry, the fondant-backed character should be firm rather than floppy. Gently push the bottom edge into the cake in your chosen position; it should stand securely on its own.
